Supra

This is the Supra four color mechanical pencil. It was made by the McLennon Pen Company, 220 S. State Street, Chicago 4, Illinois. It's almost a direct copy of the Norma #104 pencil but for a few exceptions. It's smaller in diameter and it's one solid piece from the front to the eraser cap. The eraser cap comes off with the eraser inside the cap. It can be reinserted with the eraser outside.

It has one color guide lock in the rear and two lock positions in the front. Length is 5-1/2" and barrel diameter is 11/32". It tapers down at the last 5/8". Weight is 19 grams, or about 0.67 oz.

Chase

This is a Chase 4-color pencil. Colors can be advanced by pushing on the serrated color guide. Color of the selection is painted between the serrations. By advancing the next color to be selected, the earlier selection springs back automatically. The top cap can be unscrewed to access the eraser.

On one face near the top it says "Patented U. S. Pat 2, 113,320 & 2,136,290. The pencil body is 6-sided and changes abruptly to a conical shape at the front. It is 3/8" from one side to the opposite side. Length is 5-1/4". Weight is 32.5 grams or 1.2 ounces. Made in Japan.

Here's an old German 4-color pencil. The colors are changed by pulling the large 8-sided rear section back, as shown. The four colors can then be seen in the slots near the center. The back can then be rotated until a dimple is opposite the desired color. The back can then be slid forward again to advance the selected lead. Lead size is about .070" or 1.8mm. Length with the back extended is 5-15/16" and is 5" in the normal position. The rear portion is 7/16" around from one flat side to the other. The cylindrical front section is 11/32" in diameter. The pencil weighs 25 grams or about 0.9 ounces. The manufacturer is unknown. It sold recently for $10.

Here's an unusual Fend Super Norma Walzgold 4color pencil. Rolled gold overlay with a wavy pattern. On the lower part of the pencil there's a monthly calendar. By rotating the day's band, you match them to the fixed upper weekdays. The pencil is 5-3/8" long. Sold for $60.00 recently.

A similar pencil was made in England. It's silver colored and has black, green, blue and red leads. The rear section is 8-sided. It can be pulled back, rotated to select the color, and slid forward again. It measures 5-1/4" long in the normal position. The manufacturer is unknown. It sold recently for $20

This 4-color pencil has no name but it does say Germany U. S. Zone. The color guide is marked with the lead color and can be seen in each slot. Pushing on a screw head can advance each guide. The screw can be adjusted for easy sliding. Lead size is about .070" or 1.8mm. The pencil is cylindrical changing abruptly to a conical shape at the end. The front portion slides off so that new leads can be inserted in each of the 4 holders. The top cap, including the clip, can be removed. An eraser is in the bottom of the top cap.

The pencil is 5-1/8" long and 11/32" in diameter. It weighs 13.5 grams or a little under 1/2 ounce.

Here's another unusual 4-color pencil that may be made of pearl celluloid. A small spring-loaded button with the lead color in the center can be pushed forward around the curved slot. It then locks in place as it moves slightly forward. Turning the rear section of the pencil advances the lead. The clear glass ball at the rear has a flat side and can be used as a magnifier. The rear section holding the magnifier can be removed to access an eraser.

Near the clip it says "Nichols Products Co. Moorestown, N.J. Pat. U. S. 1730679 CAN 318395." Some of this has been worn away on mine. The overall length is 5-15/16" and the body diameter is 3/8". The glass is 5/8" in diameter. Weight is 20 grams or about 2/3 of an ounce.

This antique 4-color pencil is different yet. Each lead holder can be slid forward using a jeweled button corresponding to the desired color. The other 3 colors are shown slightly advanced. The end cap and lead holders appear to be gold plated brass. The body may be silver or silver plated brass. It is 3-1/4" long when the lead holders are retracted. The body is oval shaped and is 7/16" by 5/8". The manufacturer is unknown. It sold recently for $75.

Even more unusual is this older 6-color pencil made in Austria. The cap and leads can be pulled out with the leads and holders attached. The desired lead can be faced forward and the rest rotated back. This assembly can then be reinserted and the pencil is ready for use. The manufacturer is unknown. The pencil is 5" long.

YAFA Multi-Function Pen/Pencil

This is a combination pen and pencil. It appears to be anodized aluminum with a flat finish. The standard pen colors are red and black. The pencil is 0.5mm. To select the pen or pencil the pencil must be held on it's side as in the picture. Gravity then locates the section to be advanced. The plunger at the top can then be pushed to advance the selection. The button near the clip is pushed to retract the selection, which is spring loaded. The selection is engraved at the left center. It says, "black," "red" or "0.5mm." The front section is round and can be unscrewed to change refills or leads. The top can be pulled off to access a small eraser.

Length is 5-13/16" without a selection advanced and 5-9/16" when advanced. The front section is 3/8" in diameter and the rear 6-sided section is 3/8" on opposite sides. Weight is 18.5 grams or 2/3 of an ounce. It is made in japan and sold by Yafa, 21306 Gault St., Canoga Park, CA 91303. I found this at Office Depot late in 1999. Other pen colors are green or blue. Refills were $6.0 for a package of six.

These pencils were part of a collection by a German collector.

An 8-color pencil by Pentel

Well, it isn't really a writing pencil, but an artist's pencil and uses 2-mm lead. It has eight colors: pink, red, orange, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue and brown. The pencil body is transparent so all the leads can be seen. By rotating the orange clip, the selected color lead can be seen in line with the slot. By pressing the yellow plunger at the end of the pencil, the selected lead will drop out to it's maximum length, and then is held by a retaining clip at the end of the lead. The length of lead can be adjusted as in most drafting pencils by holding the plunger down and pushing the lead to the desired length. Leads can be removed by rotating the plunger index to be in line with the clip. Pushing the plunger will then release the old lead and a new one can be inserted.

The model number for this little gem is PH158. It's 5-1/2" long and the body is 1/2" in diameter at the thickest part and gradually tapers down at the end. Some models come with a blue clip instead of an orange one. It weighs only 16 grams, or a little over 1/2 ounce. An instruction sheet comes with the pencil. Made by Pentel Co. Ltd. (Japan). It had a suggested retail price of $14.00. Was discontinued a few years ago.

A 4-color pen by BIC

Today, there's a BIC 4 color ballpoint pen. It writes blue, black, red and green inks. Each cartridge is refillable and retractable. There are four colored push tabs at the top of the pen. They correspond to the four colors. Sliding one tab all the way down will lock a pen in place. To select another color, simply push down the desired color tab. This will automatically release the previous one and lock the new one. Pushing part way on an unused tab will retract all the pens. #MMXPI 1991 has a blue barrel indicating a medium point. #MMXP11 has an orange barrel indicating a fine point. Length is 5-3/4" and the body is 7/16" in diameter at the thickest part. It tapers down abruptly at the end. Each pen weighs 12-1/2 grams, or a little under 1/2 ounce. The address is BIC Corporation, Milford, CT 06460. (Made in France). Retail price is $1.79. A four-color refill package is available with a retail price of $2.25

Ten-Color Pens by Pentech

It's called Fireworks and is more oriented for children. It writes pink, green, red, yellow, blue, black, aquamarine, purple, orange and brown. Each ballpoint cartridge is retractable. There are ten push tabs of the corresponding color. Sliding one tab all the way forward will lock it in place. Pressing the plunger releases it and another color can be selected. Length is 5" and is 23/32" in diameter. It weighs 19 grams, or a little over 5/8 of an ounce. This is model M-80. The address is Pentech International Inc., Edison, NJ 08817 (China). It sells at Wal-Mart for $1.94.

This is a Coca-Cola Bear pen also made by Pentech and is again child oriented. It writes pink, green, red, yellow, blue, black, aquamarine, purple, orange and brown. Each ballpoint cartridge is retractable. There are ten push tabs of the corresponding color. Sliding one tab all the way forward will lock it in place. Pressing the polar bear releases it and another color can be selected. Length is 5" and the body is 23/32" in diameter. It weighs 20 grams, or a little under 3/4 of an ounce. The address is Pentech International Inc., Edison, NJ 08817 (China). It sells at Wal-Mart for $2.76.
