It seems many of us had several of these popular pencils for school or at home or even at work. They are remembered as far back as the 40's and 50's. They may still be lurking in the recesses of a desk or a forgotten cigar box. The reason may be that leads and erasers are not easily found any more and so they're no longer used. The 1.1mm (0.046") leads almost never break and last for a long time. They are more than twice as thick as the more popular 0.5mm size and contain almost 5 times the volume of lead. This lead size is really great, but it's becoming very hard to find. Here is a chance to not only bring your pencils back to life but also to acquire more of these older pencils.

I specialize in the stronger .046” (1.1 mm) leads..046” actually calculates out to be 1.168 mm but is referred to as 1.1 mm. I also have smaller sizes available as well. New Classic Scripto K21 Pencil Combos For Sale

The K21 is an improved Scripto design and has a translucent barrel. It still uses the same erasers and 1.1 mm leads as the Scripto Classic twist type. This is a push type of pencil instead of a twist action. You can easily push on the eraser with the thumb of your writing hand and the lead advances about 1/32" each time. The clutch is a single 3-prong piece made of solid brass and offers a firm grip on the lead. The plastic material of the barrel and some internal pieces is not brittle compared to the older K780 and is not prone to cracking.

Up to six extra leads can be stored inside the pencil. Each lead can be advanced automatically simply by pushing a couple of times on the eraser. The pencils are 5-3/4” long and weigh 3/10 of an ounce.

This new package contains one K21 pencil and a tube of six 4" HB polymer leads. There is also a spare lead in the pencil barrel. The pencils and tube of leads are mounted on a card. One corner of some cards may be clipped but the package remains unopened. Barrel color is available in translucent violet, blue or red. Available for $10.00 each.

K21 loading Instructions

The K21 pencil comes with a spare lead inside. After the first lead is used, just point the pencil down and make several clicks by pushing the eraser. The short remainder of the old lead will fall out, if it has not already, and the spare lead will then appear at the point. After the spare is used, you can add up to 4 extra leads by removing the eraser and placing them in the back. Replace the eraser and proceed to advance the new lead as before.

Green Scripto Classic K780 Pencils for Sale

Scripto Classic twist type 1.1mm pencils in transparent green. These are unused “new” old stock from about 1980. The word Scripto is along the length of the clip and USA is stamped in very small letters on the top of the clip. The pencils are complete with an eraser and an HB lead. The pencils are 5-3/8” long and weigh 3/10 of an ounce. Available for $14.00 each.

Older Scripto twist pencil loading instructions

Hold the barrel of the pencil in one hand and twist the eraser holder clockwise with the other. Continue until the shuttle is all the way forward and the old lead, if any, is pushed out. Then return the shuttle as far back as it will go by turning the eraser holder counter clockwise. Insert the new lead at the pencil tip and then advance it until about 1/8” of the lead sticks out. Press the lead against a hard surface and the lead should move in about 1/16”. It is then locked in place and you are ready to write.

J150 Erasers

These Scripto erasers will fit the K780 pencils and the K21 pencils. Each eraser comes with a metal clip. Two erasers are $4.00.

Substitute white vinyl-based erasers are available but need the original clip to fit properly in the K780 or K21 pencil. More information.

Autopoint 1.1mm pencils

This is a 1.1mm twist type pencil. It is 5-5/8” long. It has eight flat sides except for the last 1-5/16” near the tip and that is round tapering down from 1-5/16” in diameter. It weighs 10 grams or about .35 ounces. Like other Autopoint pencils, it takes 1-3/8” long leads. The eraser can be pulled off to access storage for extra leads. Comes with a lead installed and 4 extra leads in back. This pencil is new. Available in blue for $9.00 each.

Autopoint Erasers

Four erasers come in a tube for the two Autopoint pencils described above. They will not fit in the Scripto K780 type pencils. A tube of 4 is available for $4.00

Skilcraft Double Enders for Sale

This is a beautiful Double Ender pencil. The leads are 1.1mm (.046”). Red is at the top end and blue is at the bottom. It has twist action operation to advance the lead and has an adjustable metal clip. The word Skilcraft is on the clip. The double enders take 1-3/8” leads that are for sale and listed further down.

The pencils are "new" old stock and are unused. A red lead and blue lead are installed in the pencil. The pencils are 5-15/16” long and weigh 11 grams or 0.388 ounces. Available for $6.00 each.

4" H Leads For Sale

4” H Clay Based

Scripto size leads are 4" long and 1.1 mm (.046”) in diameter. H grade is one grade harder than HB and write slightly lighter. They are clay-based instead of the newer polymer-base. Shipped in a sturdy plastic tube and a padded envelope. 10 leads are $5.00.

Choice of 4” HB Leads For Sale

I have both clay based and polymer based 4” leads for sale. Although the HB grading is the same for either one, the polymer-based leads write a just little bit darker than the clay-based leads. The price is the same.

3-1/2” CX-22 “Mark Sense” Leads For Sale

3-1/2” CX-22 Clay Based

Scripto size leads are 3-1/2” long and 1.1 mm (.046”) in diameter. There is no grading for these black leads except for a number CX-22. They are referred to as “Mark Sense’ or “Electrographic” marking leads and were used to mark older forms that were read with an “electric eye.” They appear to be about one grade softer than the 2B polymer leads and write darker. Very little pencil pressure is needed to write with them.

The leads are clay-based instead of the newer polymer-base. Shipped in a sturdy plastic tube and a padded envelope. 10 leads are $5.00.

Scripto E-520 Long Colored 1.1 mm (.046") Leads For Sale

Leads are 4” long and 1.1 mm (.046”) in diameter. The leads were intended for sale in Canada and the text on the other side of the tubes is in French. The word “mines” is French for leads. There are six leads in a tube.

Scripto P1150C and F1150 0.5mm Cassette Pencils and Cassettes For Sale

This pencil has become a collector item since it was discontinued several years ago. They are unused "new" old stock. The pencil is complete with 6 HB leads and an eraser. The pencil is 5-3/4” long and 5/16” in diameter and has a clutch advance for the lead. Weight with cassette is 10.3 grams or about 0.36 ounces. A thin metal tube at the point allows the lead to be easily seen for fine work. Color is black. Available for $5.00 each.

A replacement cassette contains 12 HB 2-3/8” long leads plus one eraser. The cassette is 4” long and 3/16” for the smaller diameter. Weight is only 2.1 grams. The red cap at the left has a small hole in the center that allows only one lead to be selected when the next lead is needed. The old cassette can be easily pulled out of the pencil barrel. This pencil has also become a collector item since it was discontinued several years ago. It is similar to the P1170C but had a plastic end piece. They are unused "new" old stock. The pencil is complete with 6 HB leads and an eraser. The pencil is 5-5/8” long and 5/16” in diameter and has a clutch advance for the lead. Weight with cassette is 7.5 grams or about 0.27 ounces. A thin metal tube at the point allows the lead to be easily seen for fine work. Color is maroon. Takes cassette refill F1170C or F1179C. Available for $5.00 each.

Scripto P670 0.7mm Cushion Point Pencil For Sale

Perhaps this pencil was an admission that thinner leads tend to break easily and this pencil would solve the problem. When the lead is pressed harder than normal, a fairly strong spring allows the lead to retract into the thin metal tube at the tip that supports it. It works very well as long as the lead extends no longer than 1/16” beyond the metal tube. Colors are yellow, red and blue.

It measures 5-5/8” long and 11/32” in diameter. It has a metal clip. The pencil is clutch operated. Pushing on the eraser advances the lead. Available for $5.00 each.

Scripto P570 0.7mm Cushion Point Yellow Pencils For Sale

This is also a cushion point pencil similar in operation to the P670. This pencil is actually called a “Yellow Pencil.” It measures 6-3/8” long and 5/32” in diameter. The front section of 1-1/2” is six-sided. The remainder is round. It does not come with a clip. The overall features make it look and feel like a regular yellow wooden pencil. It is clutch operated. Pushing on the eraser advances the lead. Available for $5.00 each.

Scripto P350

Here is a very unusual pencil. It is made of stainless steel. It is similar to the other P series pencils and has the “cushion” point feature. It has a waffle type rubber grip and takes 0.5mm leads. The pencil is made in Japan. The metal cap can be easily pulled off to access a small eraser. When the eraser is removed, more 2-3/8” leads can be inserted. This is also a clutch action pencil and the lead can be advanced by pushing the metal cap. The pencil is 5-1/4” long and 5/16” in diameter. It weighs 9 grams or about 0.32 ounces.

The writing is just above the rubber grip and is normally hard to see.

Scripto P-900 Series Drafting Type Pencils For Sale

Perhaps the best of the smaller lead pencils. The metal cap can be easily pulled off to access a small eraser. When the eraser is removed, extra 2-3/8” leads can be inserted. This is also a clutch action pencil and the lead can be advanced by pushing the metal cap. These pencils do have the “cushion” feature.” Colors are black, blue and maroon.

The pencil is 5-1/2” long and 5/16” in diameter. It weighs 8.9 grams or about 0.31 ounces. The 0.9 and 0.7mm pencils are available for $10.00. The 0.3mm pencil is available for $12.00.

Polymer leads have become very popular in the past few years. They are different because they contain a plastic compound instead of clay. According to Pentel, “The composition if Hi-Polymer lead is synthetic resin and graphite which is said give a very strong and flexible lead. Conventional clay-bonded leads tend to be too brittle when reduced to the diameter required for fine lead pencils.” Despite this “breakthrough” in lead design, I find that the thinner polymer leads break far too easily compared to thicker leads, polymer or clay. It seems I am not the only person who has experienced this frustrating lesson.
